The brief here was modern rather than ornamental: clean lines, a simple repeating rhythm, no scrollwork. That look only holds if the proportions are right for the opening, so the panel was drawn and fabricated for this driveway instead of adapted from a stock width. Steel is the material that makes a design like this possible: thin members that still carry their own weight without sagging, and welded joints ground flush so the frame reads as one piece. How we fabricate and finish iron work is described on our iron and metal fencing page.
Pressure washed back, then stained black
The existing fence did not need replacing, it needed reviving. Years of North Texas sun leave timber grey and chalky on the surface while the boards underneath are still sound. We pressure washed the run back to clean timber, let it dry, and refinished it in a black stain that now ties the whole boundary to the new gate.
Refinishing buys real time on a fence that is structurally fine, and a pigmented stain does more than change the colour: it blocks the UV load that breaks the timber down in the first place. One finish across the gate and the boundary
Black stain on the timber and a black iron gate give a single, continuous frontage rather than a new gate sitting awkwardly against a weathered fence. Handling both parts of the job with the same crew is what makes that possible: the gate posts, the gate itself and the refinishing were sequenced so nothing had to be masked, redone or colour matched after the fact.
