One crew for the fence line and the gate
This Highland Park property needed two things that are usually quoted by two different contractors: a long privacy fence running the length of the lot, and an automated driveway gate at the alley. We handled both under one contract, so the fence line, the gate posts, and the operator pad were set as a single structure rather than three separate jobs that meet at a corner.
The fence is cedar, built tall and boarded tight for privacy against the sidewalk and the neighbouring lot. The gate panel is clad in the same cedar, so the driveway opening reads as part of the fence rather than a bolted-on afterthought. A slide gate where a swing gate would not fit
The driveway opens onto a narrow alley with parking on both sides, so there is no clear arc for a swing panel to travel through. A sliding gate solves that: the panel runs sideways along the fence line and leaves the drive clear. We size the run space before anything is ordered, because a sliding panel needs meaningfully more lateral room than the opening it covers. The panel runs on a LiftMaster CSL24U operator, a commercial-rated slide unit chosen for the weight of a solid cedar-clad panel and for daily in-and-out use. Steel posts and deep footings before a single board goes up
The photograph here is the part nobody sees once the cedar is on. The run is framed on galvanised steel posts with a steel header at the gate opening, set in concrete footings poured to our one-third depth rule. Highland Park sits on the same expansive black clay as the rest of the Metroplex: it swells after spring rain and shrinks in August, and a shallow post will lean within a few seasons. Steel framing matters twice over on a job like this. It holds a tall privacy run straight against wind load, and it gives the sliding gate a post stiff enough to carry the panel without racking.
